Sep. 14, 2020 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Our guest speaker Ilaria Barchetta will speak to us about "the new epidemic of metabolic diseases in the era of food excess." Ilaria is a medical doctor specialized in Internal Medicine working on diabetes and metabolic diseases. She has a Ph.D. in Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, and is currently a postdoc fellow at the Department of Experimental Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome. Ilaria will discuss obesity as a global pandemic in both Western and developing countries and how obesity leads to metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, inflammation and cardiovascular disease. She will then turn our attention to novel research produced by her group in Rome showing that abdominal fat inflammation represents the main determinant of metabolic diseases in obesity. It is not just the amount of fat that matters, but also the quality of the fat and the presence or not of the "sick", inflamed fat, which is associated with disease in overweight/obese people. Ilaria was licensed as an Associate Professor in Endocrinology in 2018 by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. Her scientific production includes over 50 scientific papers on diabetes and metabolic diseases published during the last 10 years. Among her scientific collaborations, one of the most productive which she would like to mention is with the Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmo Hospital, Lund University, where she spent 1-year postdoc in 2015/2016. Nov. 02, 2020 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
This week we will learn more about our members Devica and Per Nystedt, who will each present an "ego speech" about themselves. The Rotary Club Ego Speech is a rite of passage for all new members, giving them the opportunity to share their family history, personal milestones and special interests with their fellow Rotarians. We're looking forward to getting to know Elena and Emilia in a whole new way! Here is a sneak preview: Per and Devica settled in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1977 where they lived until 1984. Per then had a long assignment in South Shields in the North East of England where Device tried her best to a good mum. They returned “home” for some months but left early 1985 for Hanoi, Vietnam. Since then our dynamic duo have lived and worked long-term in Brazil, Mozambique, South Africa, Nicaragua, Cyprus, Jordan, Iraq, Indonesia, Israel, Liberia, Egypt, Sudan and Rome. There were also short-term stays - about 2 months or so in various other parts of the same continent of the countries mentioned above, plus Australia (Darwin). We returned to Sweden in 2016 and 3 months later went to our first Rotary meeting in Malmo. So now we know where they have been. What they were doing and, more importantly, why remains a mystery which will be revealed in this evenings ego speeches. Due to the social distancing precautions made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic, physical attendance at this meeting is open to MIRC members ONLY only and will be limited to 15 people.
