Friends of Kamuga, Homa Bay, Kenya
Jan 16, 2023 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Ulla Herbert is former chairperson of IKF (The Association of International Women in Sweden. In her role at IKF, Ulla met a Kenyan lady in Umeå who was the chairperson of Kamuga Women Organization. Together they started Friends of Kamuga. Since 2005 the 2 organizations have supported a Vocational School in a village and a Nursery School in the slums of Homa Bay. We moved the Vocational School to Homa Bay, the central town, in order to attract day pupils.

Ulla is originally a teacher. She married an Englishman in 1962. She is currently self employed and has been active in Malmö political life since the 70s. She spent some years in London and almost 2 years in Iran before and during the revolution. She has worked in the Swedish Embassy at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SIDA during the first half of the 80s in Nairobi. This evening Ulla will share some of her experiences and inform us about the projects in Homa Bay.

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.

Member Red Talk: Dr. Annarita Antelmi
Jan 23, 2023 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

RED stands for "Rotarians Every Day, experiences worth sharing," modelled after the short, powerful presentations made famous by TED Talks. The idea is for Malmö International Rotary Club members to present their own experiences or information about a current project they are working on in order to inspire others and foster more opportunities for collaboration between club members.

Tonight our speaker is Dr. Annarita Antelmi, MD, PhD and Dermatologist, an Occupational Physician with the Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology at Skåne University Hospital. The title of her talk is called, "Can you be allergic to your clothes?"

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.

The landmine problem and how to solve it
Jan 30, 2023 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Our guest speaker, Henrique Garbino,  is a former Rotary Peace Fellow (Uppsala, 2017-2019) and is currently a doctoral candidate at the Swedish Defence University (2021-present). He served as a combat engineer officer in the Brazilian Army for over a decade (2006-2017). His experience in the military covered a wide range of different activities, such as explosive ordnance disposal, civil-military coordination, and training and education, in contexts as diverse as border control, law enforcement, and United Nations peace operations. After his military service, he has focused on reducing the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war in Tajikistan (2018), Colombia (2018-2019), and Ukraine (2019-2020; 2022). His doctoral dissertation aims at identifying viable ways of reducing the use of landmines by non-state armed groups.

The 1997 Ottawa Convention fully prohibits the production, stockpiling, transfer, and use of anti-personnel landmines and is usually considered one of the most efficient international treaties. To date, there are 164 signatory states and anti-personnel landmines have become a taboo in most societies. Still, some states such as Myanmar, Syria, and Russia have recently used such weapons. The main problem, however, is the non-state actors who are not directly bound by international humanitarian law. Insurgencies and terrorist groups, from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia to the Islamic State, have often used landmines and similar explosive devices.

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.

Member Ego Speeches
Feb 06, 2023 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

This week we will learn more about our Open Door Programme members Alejandra Duron Briones and Juliana Uber who will each present an "ego speech" about themselves. The Rotary Club Ego Speech is a rite of passage for all new members, giving them the opportunity to share their family history, personal milestones and special interests with their fellow Rotarians. We're looking forward to getting to know Alejandra and Juliana in a whole new way!

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.
